Indian Engineering students lacks higher-order thinking skills

India have a large number of youths. India is the youngest country compared to other developing countries, but most of youths are inadequately skilled for jobs except IITians and very few other engineering college students. The students passing out of ordinary colleges are not even employable.

Recent preliminary findings of learning outcome assessment of undergraduate engineering students conducted by Stanford University and the World Bank says that Russian and Chinese engineering students are better than Indian students. Indian students are good in mathematics and critical thinking skills but their overall higher order thinking skills are substantially lower than the Chinese and Russians.

The World Bank and Stanford University surveyed roughly 5000 students in different semesters from 200 randomly selected public and private Engineering institutes excluding IITs. Similar learning assessments were also conducted for engineering students in China and Russia. Detailed findings of this report will be presented to the HRD ministry, Government of India.

India produce millions of graduates every year, from thousands of Engineering Colleges. These students does not meet the basic requirements of the recruiters across the world. Although IITs and IITians are still in demand. Students are not to blame as the large number of Engineering Colleges across the country lacks basic infrastructure and faculty. These colleges are not updating the resources to provide better education and training to the students.

India's dream to become knowledge and manufacturing hub lie in the hands of youths. All India Council for Technical Education has started taking steps to update and revise engineering curriculum and has directed the engineering colleges to provide modern technology and equipments to the students.
